Bryan Oborne

» Associate

Upon graduation from the University of Winnipeg in 1989, Bryan Oborne began his career with the Manitoba Round Table and the Sustainable Development Coordination Unit, Province of Manitoba.

Bryan later gained direct experience in the primary resource sector of the Manitoba economy where sustainability is fundamental to producer livelihood. He worked and lived with experts associated with wild rice harvesting and trapping in Northern Manitoba and zero-till grain farming in the Red River Valley. Shortly thereafter, he began work on his Master’s Degree in natural resources management at University of Manitoba. This saw him relocate to south-central Manitoba for a year while completing his research on the economic effectiveness and efficiency of small scale water management along the Manitoba Escarpment.

After working on several sustainable development and watershed management projects, Bryan established Panterra Management Ltd. in 1995. Panterra is a specialized consulting firm focused on the provision of business, communication, and governance strategies for leading agricultural and natural resource-related organizations. Panterra’s expertise involves understanding and addressing the watershed-based interrelationships among land, water, wildlife, and human resources.

As a PhD student with the University of Manitoba Department of Environment and Geography, Associate with the International Institute for Sustainable Development, Watershed Consultant for the Tobacco Creek Model Watershed initiative, and instructor with the University of Winnipeg’s Environmental Studies Program, Bryan Oborne’s research, implementation and policy efforts are focused on Unlocking the Potential for Watershed Governance on the Canadian Prairies.

As the inaugural recipient of the Minister of Manitoba Water Stewardship International Water Studies Scholarship, Bryan recently spent four months in the Upper Jordan River Watershed, conducting comparative research of Israel’s water management systems, structures, and stakeholders.
