Agricultural Wetland Research Network

The purpose of the Agricultural Wetland Research Network is to share all available information, emerging research and our own collaborative efforts related to the flow of nutrients and other contaminants, the socio-economic value of functional wetland ecosystem services, and the role of watershed processes in maintaining the downstream water quality of freshwater lakes. We seek to establish the network as a credible and influential source of accurate information on a very complex topic—one which would now benefit greatly from the harnessing of as much science-based information focused on wetlands and watersheds as possible. Participation in this network would be open to any organization or individual working in this area, and ultimately we see the network providing value in addressing our collective need to better understand how upstream wetlands and watersheds can and must help provide adequate supplies of high quality water to freshwater lakes downstream. The objectives of the Agricultural Wetland Research Network are:
-
To provide a continuing, low-cost, internet-based forum for the ongoing, international participation of researchers focused on the flow of nutrients and other contaminants, the socio-economic value of functional wetland ecosystem services and the role of watershed processes in maintaining downstream water quality.
-
To harness the cumulative and collaborative potential of currently available information, emerging research, and new collaborative efforts for the benefit of Manitoba, Israel, and other global locations where the natural functions associated with upstream wetlands and watersheds must be restored to provide adequate supplies of high quality water to freshwater lakes.
-
To serve as a globally credible and influential source of accurate scientific information (for the benefit of policy-makers, other researchers and science-focused journalists) regarding the role of wetlands and watersheds within natural and agriculturally influenced ecosystems.
-
To conduct collaborative research and facilitate the rapid expansion and assessment of wetland and watershed-based initiatives designed to improve the downstream water quality of freshwater lakes within predominantly agricultural landscapes.
